ClearLicensed

For HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, pest control and general contractors

One missed renewal can stop work in a whole state.

ClearLicensed keeps your licenses, bonds, insurance and CE hours in one list and emails you 90, 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before each one runs out. Busy that month? Our team can file the renewal for you.

14 days of Basic free, no card. After that, one license stays free, or pick a plan.

The problem

An expired license stops work, and the fees come after.

Say your Florida air conditioning license misses August 31. Our Florida data shows no grace period: from the next day you may not contract under it until it is renewed. Other states give you a few weeks. Check with your board either way.

Work stops

With an expired license you generally cannot pull permits, bid jobs or advertise in that trade. Rules differ by state, so check the board.

Late fees and extra paperwork

Most boards add a late fee. Some also want your CE proven again, or a fresh application, once the grace period is over.

Bonds and insurance run on their own dates

The license can be current while the bond or the workers' comp certificate behind it ran out last month. Nobody tells you until a customer or a board asks.

Every state does it differently

Different boards, different cycles, different CE hours. A Florida CE deadline and a Georgia renewal date do not line up, and nobody keeps one calendar for both.

Why ClearLicensed

A lower price, filing done for you, and sources on every rule.

The short version of how we compare with the other contractor license tools we looked at.

$20 a month, and one license free

Starter covers 10 licenses for $20 a month. Keep a single license on the Free plan for as long as you like. The contractor license trackers we checked in October 2026 start at $99 to $199 a month.

We can file the renewal for you

None of the trackers we looked at will do the renewal itself. Send us a license, approve the price ($149 for a simple online renewal, $249 with CE proof or paper forms) and our team files it for you.

How managed renewals work

State rules with the sources attached

50 states and 6 trades on file. Every rule links to the board page we used and shows when we last checked it. Where we have not checked a state yet, the page says so.

Find your state

How it works

Add your licenses once. We send the reminders.

Setup is mostly typing in license numbers and expiration dates.

  1. Add your licenses

Pick the state and trade, then type in the license number and your own expiration date. Where we have checked the state, the board, renewal cycle and CE rules are filled in too, with a badge that says so.

  2. Get emailed ahead of the date

Reminders go out 90, 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before expiry, at 9 AM your time, and again if something lapses. Everyone on your team sees the same dashboard.

  3. Renew it, or send it to us

Renew on the board's own site and log it here. Or request managed filing, and our team files it by hand on the state portal.

The reminder

This is the email you get.

It lands in the inbox you already check. It names the license, the state and the days left, and links straight to the details.

  • Six emails, not one

90, 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the date, at 9 AM your time. Plus one more if it lapses.

  • One click when it is done

Already renewed? Say so from the email, no login needed. Waiting on a CE certificate? Ask to be reminded again in 3 days.

  • Bonds and insurance too

The bond and the liability certificate behind each license get the same reminders as the license itself.

Sample email. Names and numbers are made up.

Features

What it keeps track of

Licenses first. Then the bonds, insurance, CE hours and paperwork that decide whether those licenses stay valid.

All features

Multi-state tracking

Every license your company holds, in every state, in one list. Reminders follow the date you enter, so they work anywhere. Where we have checked a state, we also fill in the board, the renewal cycle and the rules we have on file.

Reminders by email

Emails go out 90, 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before an expiration, plus one if it lapses. They arrive at 9 AM in your time zone, and each person sets their own schedule.

Documents

Attach the license certificate, the renewal receipt and the insurance certificate to the license they belong to. Files stay private and open through links that expire.

Basic and up

CE hour tracking

Log each course you finish and the hours against the license. You can see how far you are from what the state requires before the renewal date.

Basic and up

Bonds, insurance and workers' comp

License bonds, general liability and workers' comp certificates get their own expiration dates and reminders, listed next to the licenses they back.

Renewal calendar

A month view of every expiration across your states. Useful for planning who is off the job, and when the renewal fees hit.

Managed renewals

Too busy to renew it yourself? We will do it.

Ask for managed filing on any license you track. Our team fills in the renewal by hand on the state portal, emails you as it moves and saves the confirmation to your account. You see the price and approve it before we start.

  • Priced per license and per renewal, so you only pay for what you hand off
  • Works on any plan, including the trial
  • Every status change shows in your account, and you can message the team from the request

$149 per license for a simple online renewal, $249 when the board wants CE proof or paper forms. State fees are extra, and the board makes the final call.

How managed renewals work
  1. You request

Pick a license and tell us anything we should know.

  2. We quote

You see the price for that license and renewal before anything happens.

  3. You approve and pay

Checkout runs through Stripe. We do not start until the payment clears.

  4. We file

Someone on our team fills in the renewal on the state portal, and messages you if anything is missing.

  5. You get the confirmation

We save it to the license and update the expiration date.

State coverage

All 50 states, with sources you can check.

Reminders work in every state because they follow your own dates. In 50 states we have also checked the renewal rules against the board and link the pages we used.

Full rule details

We checked the renewal rules against the licensing board or another official source. Cycle, deadlines, CE hours and the official renewal link are on the page.

Reminders only for now

We are still checking this state, often because a board site would not load for us. Add your licenses and your own dates and the reminders work. Confirm details with the board.

FAQ

Questions people ask first

Accuracy, reminders, pricing and managed filing.

Still not sure?

Write to [email protected] and a person answers, usually within one business day.

What does ClearLicensed do?

It keeps one list of every contractor license, CE requirement, bond and insurance certificate your company holds, in every state, and emails you before each one expires. You enter your own expiration dates, so it works for any state. If you would rather not do the renewal yourself, you can ask our team to file it for you.

How accurate is the state licensing information?

Your reminders follow the expiration date you enter, so they do not depend on our state data. The rule details we show (renewal cycle, deadlines, CE hours, official links) come from the licensing board or another official source, with links to the pages we used. Checked states carry a "Full rule details" badge, the others say "Reminders only for now". Some boards block our research tools, so a few states are less checked than others. Rules and deadlines change, and fee amounts are approximate, so treat everything as general guidance and confirm with the board before you rely on it. When a fact is missing, the page says "Not published, check with the board" instead of guessing.

Is this legal or compliance advice?

No. ClearLicensed is a tracking and reminder tool, plus an optional filing service done by our staff. We are not a law firm and not affiliated with any state licensing board. We cannot promise that a license will be renewed or stay in good standing.

Which states are covered?

Reminders work for every state, because you enter your own dates. Full rule details (renewal cycle, deadlines, CE hours, official links) are available where we have checked them. The states page shows which states have them today. For any other state or trade you can still add a license and get the same reminders.

How do the reminders work?

By default each person on your team gets an email 90, 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before a license, bond or insurance item expires, plus one if it lapses. They go out at 9 AM in your organization's time zone. Everyone can change their own schedule or turn the emails off. Premium, and every trial, also get a weekly summary email.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. A new account gets 14 days of the Basic plan without a card. When the trial ends the account moves to the Free plan: one license with email reminders, for as long as you like. Pick a paid plan any time to track more.
